Feature Release - Semantic Search
New plugin alert: Semantic Search. Type what you mean, Filestash finds the right files powered by AI

Search the way you think
Filestash already has a bunch of search plugins, like the SQLite FTS5 search plugin that crawls your files and builds a local full-text index. Semantic Search builds on top of that index. It doesn’t create a new one, it just makes the existing one smarter by having an AI model interpret your natural language and translate it into the kind of query an expert would write by hand.
- “the invoice I sent to Alex last month”
- “the PDF proposal for Acme”
- “the docker compose file for staging”
- “photos from the Japan trip”
- “that spreadsheet with Q4 numbers”
No exact filenames, no remembering paths, no keyword roulette. It expands file types (“pictures” becomes jpg, png, gif, …), understands folder scoping (“in the Desktop folder”), and handles size-based queries (“large pdf files”). Results come back ranked by relevance as if you had an expert writing full-text search queries for you.
Works everywhere
Of course, it works everywhere whether your files live on S3, SFTP, FTP, WebDAV, SMB, and even the virtual filesystem!
Setup
Enable it in the admin panel, point it at any OpenAI-compatible endpoint, and you’re set. Works with OpenAI out of the box, but also any other local AI provider like Ollama, OpenRouter, or LiteLLM.
